Pickling Oranges

What should I pickle next?

I was watching modern family when a scene came on from Modern Family. I think it was the 8th episode of season 8. In the episode, there are three people, Gloria, Cam, and Phil who formed an alliance with each other because they are all married to people from the same family. Phil calls Gloria and Cam characters and says they need to meet up. He tells them to use the excuse that they need to get orange juice on their spouses.

Thats when it hit me! I should pickle oranges.

Ingredients:

1 cup of distilled white vinegar

1 cup of water

2.5 tablespoons of sugar

less than 1 tablespoon of salt

cinnamon

tang drink mix powder (or any orange tasting powdered drink mix)

more sugar

small oranges

Instructions:

  1. cut the oranges into third and remove the skin

  2. place in the bottom of mason jars

  3. put a few sprinkles of cinnamon and tang into each jar and stir

  4. put the sugar salt, water and vinegar in a saucepan and bring to a boil on the stove

  5. cool the solution

  6. pour the solution into the mason jars

  7. add a tablespoon of sugar into each jar and stir until the sugar is dissolved

  8. close the lids and put in the fridge

This recipe was able to fill three 8 oz. mason jars.

Review:

The most awful pickles that I have tasted in my entire life. The vinegar flavor was WAY too strong. The stench hurt my eyes and my nose. If I were to make these again I would lower the amount of vinegar and increase the amount of sugar in the recipe. The texture was fine but it was a bit chewy.
